Active learning methods can often lead learners to talk a lot,
which in turn makes the classroom noisy.

Here is an account of one teacher's innovative strategy for
controlling the noise level during active learning class with
primary kids.
Aptly named, ‘Voizometer’ has been used in a primary class
to control the noise level.

As shown in the picture, the arrow indicates the level as:
- green signifies peaceful class,
- yellow- little noisy and
- red- very noisy class.
This is placed near the switchboard as the class becomes noisy
the arrow is marked to red, and the switches of fans & lights are turned off.
Children immediately understand why is that happening, what the teacher
is expecting, and how to bring the level back to green.
The teacher also uses some energizers/ attention
grabbers activity like saying ‘1,2,3 you see me’,
with learners responding ‘1,2,3 I see you’ or
‘Eyes on me, eyes on you.’

Voizometer is designed by Mrs. Chitra Rola, a homeroom teacher for elementary section at the Pawar Public School (Chandivali, Mumbai). She took the ET611 MOOC topic and has implemented Active Learning Strategies in her classroom.
